Should I Repair or Replace My Appliance?
When deciding whether to repair or replace an appliance, the video below describes a few things you should consider. But if you’re still not sure which option would be best for you, AA Rapid Appliance Repair would be happy to help you evaluate your broken machine. Give us a call today!
- Is it still under warranty? If so, it might be less expensive to get it repaired.
- How old is it? According to consumer reports, the life expectancy of home appliances is 5 – 15 years. Most major appliances such as your fridge, stove, washer, and dryer are built to last about 10 years. So if your machine is about 10 years old and it needs an expensive repair, it might be time to start thinking about buying a new home appliance.
- Consider the 50% Rule. If the repair will cost more than half the price of replacing the appliance, you should probably get a new one.
Does it break down a lot? Even if your machine hasn’t reached the end of its life expectancy, you might consider replacing it if it’s constantly breaking down. Otherwise, you might dump a ton of money into a series of small fixes, only to have it completely break down a year later.
How to Make Your Appliances Last Longer

Clean Up Stove Spills
One of the most common calls we get for gas stoves is that a burner won’t light. If you cook a lot, this will probably happen to you (if it hasn’t already). When your pot bubbles over or the contents of your pan splatter, some of that residue can get on your igniter and harden, making it impossible for it to light. An easy way to fix this is by removing the grate and burner cap and using a toothbrush to clean off the igniter (the small ceramic piece).

Wipe Down Your Fridge Gasket
Refrigerator door gaskets are meant to last the life of the fridge and they can! But only if we keep them clean. When sticky food residue builds up on a gasket, you have to pull harder to open the fridge. That extra force can warp or tear the gasket and it won’t seal well anymore. But just a quick wipe down with a rag and warm water once a week will keep your door sealing well for a long time!

Be Gentle with Doors & Lids
Your washer and dryer need a gentle touch. We often find that when people tend to slam the doors or drop the lids of these machines, the door switch wears out much faster and eventually breaks. To avoid having to replace this part, try making it a habit to gently close your laundry machines.
